Nearly a quarter century after topping the inaugural Forbes Midas List, Indian-American billionaire Vinod Khosla has once again claimed the crown as the world’s leading venture capitalist. The founder of Khosla Ventures and co-founder of Sun Microsystems secured the No. 1 position on Forbes’ 2026 Midas List, a milestone that reflects both his enduring influence in technology investing and the extraordinary success of one of the most consequential bets in venture capital history—his early investment in OpenAI.
Khosla’s return to the top is a remarkable full-circle moment. When Forbes launched the Midas List in 2001 to rank the world’s most successful venture capital investors, Khosla, then a partner at Kleiner Perkins, earned the top spot for backing companies that built much of the infrastructure underpinning the early internet. Twenty-five years later, he has repeated that achievement by identifying another transformative technology wave: artificial intelligence.
At the heart of Khosla’s resurgence is OpenAI. In 2019, when the organization was still largely known as a nonprofit AI research lab and long before it became a global technology powerhouse, Khosla Ventures wrote the first institutional investment check. The move came at a time when many investors remained skeptical about the commercial potential of advanced artificial intelligence. That early conviction has since paid off spectacularly.
OpenAI’s explosive growth has helped redefine the venture capital landscape. Valued at approximately $852 billion as of March 2026 following a record-breaking funding round, the company has become one of the most valuable private enterprises in history. Its rapid rise, alongside AI rival Anthropic and aerospace giant SpaceX, has fueled what many industry observers believe could become the most lucrative era ever for venture capital investors.
The 2026 Midas List, produced by Forbes in partnership with TrueBridge Capital Partners, arrives during a period of unprecedented optimism in the startup ecosystem. Investors have been rewarded by soaring valuations in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, cybersecurity, fintech and space technology. OpenAI and Anthropic continue to post record revenue growth, while SpaceX is reportedly approaching one of the most anticipated public offerings ever.
For Khosla, the achievement marks his 19th appearance on the prestigious list and reinforces a career built on identifying disruptive technologies before they become mainstream. Since launching Khosla Ventures after spending nearly two decades at Kleiner Perkins, he has invested heavily in sectors ranging from artificial intelligence and robotics to clean energy and biomedicine. His willingness to back ambitious ideas long before they gain widespread acceptance has become a defining characteristic of his investment philosophy.
Khosla’s success also highlights the growing influence of Indian-origin investors in global venture capital. Seventeen Indian-American investors earned places on the 2026 Forbes Midas List, underscoring the community’s expanding role in shaping the future of technology and entrepreneurship. Community organization Indiaspora described the achievement as evidence of the indispensable contribution Indian Americans are making to startup ecosystems across Silicon Valley and innovation hubs worldwide.
Among the highest-ranked Indian-origin investors was Eric Vishria of Benchmark, who secured the No. 3 position after benefiting from major investments in technology companies including AI chipmaker Cerebras. Index Ventures partner Shardul Shah ranked No. 10, aided by the success of cloud security company Wiz, which was acquired by Google in a landmark $32 billion deal.
DST Global co-founder Saurabh Gupta claimed the No. 15 spot through investments in companies such as Chime, Waymo and xAI, while Lightspeed Venture Partners founder Ravi Mhatre ranked No. 16 thanks largely to his substantial backing of Anthropic. General Catalyst chief executive Hemant Taneja followed at No. 19, supported by the continuing success of fintech giant Stripe.
Several other Indian-origin investors also made significant appearances on the list. Antonio Gracias of Valor Equity Partners ranked No. 32, benefiting from his long-standing involvement with SpaceX. Greenoaks founder Neil Mehta secured the No. 39 position, while SV Angel’s Ashvin Bachireddy and Mayfield’s Navin Chaddha ranked 50th and 51st respectively. Their portfolios include some of the most valuable AI companies and technology startups operating today.
Further down the rankings, investors such as Asheem Chandna, Dharmesh Thakker, Chetan Puttagunta, Aneel Ranadive, Semil Shah, Rahul Mehta and Salil Deshpande demonstrated the breadth of Indian-American influence across cybersecurity, enterprise software, fintech, artificial intelligence and infrastructure technologies. Collectively, they have helped fund many of the startups defining the next generation of global innovation.
The 2026 Midas List itself reflects a dramatic shift in venture capital priorities. Artificial intelligence has become the dominant theme, with many of the year’s biggest winners benefiting from investments in OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, Databricks and other AI-driven companies. Forbes noted that the extraordinary appreciation of these businesses has reshaped rankings and contributed to a record number of newcomers on the list.
Yet among all the success stories, Khosla’s stands apart. His ascent from a student in Pune to a Silicon Valley entrepreneur, billionaire and now two-time No. 1 investor on the Forbes Midas List embodies the long-term rewards of conviction and patience. By recognizing the potential of OpenAI years before artificial intelligence became the defining technology trend of the decade, he once again positioned himself at the forefront of a technological revolution.
As AI continues to transform industries and global markets, Vinod Khosla’s historic return to the top serves as a reminder that the biggest venture capital victories often begin with the courage to believe in an idea long before the rest of the world does.
