Arnav Singh, a 20-year-old Indian-origin student and graduate of Gunn High School, was found dead in San Jose on May 8, 2026, three days after he was reported missing by his family, according to the San José Police Department.
Singh had been dropped off near the Martin Luther King Jr. Library at San Jose State University on the afternoon of May 5. His parents told authorities they last saw him around the intersection of 4th Street and East San Fernando Street before he disappeared. When he failed to return home later that evening and could not be contacted, the family reported him missing to police.
Authorities launched a search operation in the days that followed. On May 8, officers responded to the 700 block of Phelan Avenue, an area located close to the San Jose State University campus and the Spartan Village student housing complex. Search-and-rescue personnel and firefighters later recovered Singh’s body from the location.
Police said preliminary findings from the investigation showed no immediate signs of injury or foul play. Officials have not announced any arrests, and the exact cause of death has not yet been publicly released pending further investigation.
Singh had reportedly taken a gap year after graduating from Gunn High School and was preparing to begin classes at San Jose State University in the fall semester. News of his death has shocked members of the local Indian-American community and former classmates who remembered him as a young man looking forward to starting the next chapter of his life.
